Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening uses carefully controlled bleaching to remove stains and restore your teeth to their healthy natural shade. Although you can purchase teeth whitening products over-the-counter, those products may be unproven, ineffective, and potentially even dangerous.

At Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs, the team uses proven prescription products that are only available from dental professionals.

What causes teeth to grow discolored or stained?

Some of the many different reasons that your teeth could grow discolored or stained are:

  • Drinking dark beverages like coffee, tea, or soda
  • Eating deeply colored foods like curry
  • Smoking cigarettes or using chewing tobacco
  • Aging, because as enamel erodes, the yellow dentin underneath shows
  • Taking antibiotics during tooth development
  • Tooth trauma that kills the tooth's inner nerve

Most tooth stains are extrinsic, which means they affect only your tooth enamel. But, some stains are intrinsic, which means they happen below the enamel's surface.

Although intrinsic stains are more difficult to treat, Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs can usually treat both kinds of stains with professional tooth whitening. In the rare cases that teeth whitening won't work for you, the team can suggest other effective options like veneers to whiten your smile.

What are my teeth whitening options?

Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs offers it all, so you can whiten your teeth either in the office or at home.

Zoom whitening

With Zoom whitening, the team applies a powerful whitening gel to your teeth and then uses a blue light-emitting diode (LED) lamp to accelerate the whitening process.

Generally, you have three 15-minute sessions of Zoom whitening, with an optional fourth session if needed for optimal results. Zoom in-office treatment can whiten your teeth by as many as eight shades in one appointment.

You wear eye protection and gum protection during treatment, and the Zoom gel contains amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to protect your tooth enamel while diminishing tooth sensitivity.

At-home whitening

With at-home whitening, the Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs team creates impressions of your teeth, which they use to mold custom whitening trays. You take the custom whitening trays and bleaching agent home with you after the team shows you how to apply the gel and wear the trays.

Most patients notice whiter teeth after only one at-home whitening session. Your results improve further over the next 2-6 weeks until you get optimal results.

With both office and home whitening, results can last up to a couple of years. You may need touchup treatments once or twice a year if you continue drinking dark beverages or smoking.
