Root Canals Q & A

What are root canals?

Root canal is short for root canal therapy. In this procedure, the Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs team painlessly removes an irreversibly damaged or infected nerve from the inside of your tooth while cleaning and shaping your tooth's inner root canal system using the advanced Biolase WaterLase MD™ laser system.

When combined with a filling or crown restoration, a root canal saves your tooth. This eliminates the need for extraction followed by a tooth replacement prosthetic like a bridge, denture, or dental implant.

Although dental implants and other tooth replacement options are very reliable and strong, saving your natural tooth is always preferred if at all possible.

Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs specializes in painless non-surgical root canals, and they always make sure you're completely comfortable with a variety of sedation dentistry options.

What happens during root canals?

You receive sedation like an oral sedative or nitrous oxide to help you relax before the root canal begins. Once relaxed, your Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs provider creates a tiny opening into your tooth's pulp chamber. They identify your tooth's inner canals and take measurements so they can clean and shape them.

Next, your provider fills in the now-empty canals with a sterile dental material (gutta-percha). They seal the pulp chamber opening using sterile cotton pellets along with a temporary tooth filling.

You wear the temporary filling for a couple of weeks, during which time the dental lab creates your new custom crown. A custom crown is an essential part of root canal therapy because it protects the fragile tooth from breakage or other damage.

In some cases, if your tooth doesn't have very much natural structure left, you may need a post inside the tooth. The Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs team attaches your new custom crown with strong bonding materials, and after that, you have a restored tooth.

How many appointments does root canal therapy take?

It depends on the anatomy of your damaged or decayed tooth, how many root canals are inside your tooth, and how serious the infection or damage is.

The Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs team evaluates your individual situation thoroughly, and then they tell you whether to expect one visit or several visits.

Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs is 100% dedicated to painless root canals with optimal results. Find out how easy a root canal can be by calling the office now.
