Periodontics Q & A

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease occurs when your mouth's soft tissues (and, in advanced cases, the bone beneath them) grows infected. Periodontal disease occurs in stages, including:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis happens when plaque collects at your gum line. Eventually, that plaque releases toxins and aggravates your gums. If you have gingivitis, you may have bad breath and bleeding when you brush and floss.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis is untreated. At this stage, you often have pockets of plaque below your gums. You may notice red or swollen gums, increased bleeding when you brush or floss, and gum recession.

Advanced periodontitis

Advanced periodontitis affects your teeth, gums, and bone. Advanced periodontitis can cause loose teeth and gaps in your gums along with gum and bone recession.

If you treat periodontal disease immediately, you can prevent tooth loss and other scary health consequences.

What causes periodontal disease?

Poor oral hygiene is a major cause of periodontal disease. Other factors can make you vulnerable to developing periodontal disease, such as:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Teeth misalignment
  • Medications that reduce saliva
  • Immune system problems
  • Hormone changes in women

The Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs team can evaluate your risk factors, diagnose periodontal disease, and provide highly effective treatment when you need it.

How does periodontics treatment work?

At Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs, the talented specialists treat periodontal disease without scalpels, sutures, drills, or long recovery periods. Your periodontics treatment may include:

Deep cleaning

A deep cleaning is called scaling and root planing. In this treatment, your specialist uses a specialized laser and advanced dental tools to remove plaque and tartar above and below your gumline.

Scaling and root planing smooths the tooth roots, which removes those rough areas where plaque and bacteria can collect. Then, your gums can reattach to the tooth to greatly reduce or eliminate the pockets.

Topical medication

The Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs team can place a medication like Atridox® directly in the area of periodontal disease. Often, the team performs a deep cleaning and then applies medication at the site of infection to speed up your healing. Your specialist may also use an antimicrobial rinse afterward.

Oral medication

Oral medication called Periostat® can be an excellent supplement to scaling and root planing in some cases. You typically take Periostat twice daily. This medication can strengthen your immune response to the bacteria that leads to periodontal disease.

While professional treatments are important, your dental care at home is just as vital when you're fighting periodontal disease. The Ledner & Zaiff Dental Designs team can recommend home care tips to help you stay healthy.
